Tete Dijana

Three-time Comrades Marathon champion Tete Dijana has shifted his focus beyond personal glory, turning his attention to grooming the next generation of athletes in his hometown.

Dijana has launched a youth development programme aimed at nurturing young runners and shaping them into future stars of South African athletics, using his Comrades success as a platform to inspire discipline, focus, and ambition.

Although still without a personal sponsor, the 38-year-old has taken a major step forward in his career after joining the Hollywood Athletics  Club, a move that has filled his family and supporters with pride.

Dijana, who hails from Signal Hill  village near Mahikeng, etched his name into Comrades Marathon history by claiming three titles in 2022, 2023, and 2025, firmly establishing himself as one of South Africa’s greatest ultra-marathon runners.

Joining him at Hollywood  Athletics Club is longtime teammate Edward Mothibi ,41, from Magogoe Koikoi village near Mahikeng. Mothibi claimed Comrades glory in 2019 during the Up Run, following an impressive debut in 2018 where he finished fourth.

The pair’s departure from Nedbank Running Club was confirmed on Wednesday, bringing an end to a highly successful chapter for the club’s iconic green vest.

Nedbank Running Club manager Nick Bester explained that the split was driven by financial sustainability, stating that both athletes had requested monthly retainers beyond what the club could offer long-term.

“We acknowledge the departure of two of South Africa’s most celebrated ultra-marathoners. While their contracts were not renewed due to retainer rates exceeding our limits, we hold deep respect for their achievements and contributions to the green dream,” said Bester.

However, Dijana and Mothibi dismissed claims that their move was motivated by money, insisting their decision was based on career growth and future opportunities.
