2–3 minutes By Patrick Makinita Senegal booked their place in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Egypt at the Grand Stade de Tanger in Morocco. The semifinal clash took place on Wednesday night and lived up to its billing. The West Africans, affectionately known as the “Lions of Teranga,” broke the deadlock in the 77th minute through talisman Sadio Mane. The forward reacted quickest to a rebound and fired a powerful grass-cutter that beat Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy. The two African giants were locked in a tense, goalless battle in the opening 45 minutes. Egypt remained disciplined at the back, frustrating Senegal’s attackers, until the 33-year-old Mane, who plays as a left winger for Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, made the decisive breakthrough in the second half. Mane’s strike was the tournament’s 120th goal and proved to be the difference. Senegal showed attacking intent from the opening whistle, while Egypt defended with their backs to the wall, determined to deny space and opportunities. Sensing the resistance, Senegal adjusted their approach, opting to test the goalkeeper with efforts from outside the box rather than forcing play inside the Egyptian penalty area. The tactical switch paid off. Mane’s goal with 13 minutes remaining sealed the win and sent Senegal marching into the final. The Senegalese star was deservedly named Man of the Match after a commanding performance, once again demonstrating his ability to carry the team when it matters most. Speaking to the media after the victory, Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw praised his players and credited teamwork, focus, and discipline for the result. “Before the game I told my players to never lose focus and not to allow them to play and it worked to our favour as the opponents were unable to play like they usually do, because if you allow them to play, they will definitely punish you. I also told them to press and to always play the ball in Egyptians box to create chances. They stick to the plan, executed it and we grab a win. They fought as a team and I’m extremely proud of them.” says Thiaw. Senegal will now face hosts Morocco in the final of the 2025/26 AFCON. Morocco secured their place after defeating Nigeria 4-2 on penalties following a goalless 120-minute encounter at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Egypt and Nigeria will battle for third place. Both matches are scheduled to take place over the weekend.
