Police in Rustenburg have launched an investigation following a brazen cash-in-transit robbery that took place at about 16:40 on Monday, February 16, in Old Geelhout Park. According to North West police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh, security guards were travelling along Kremetart Street when a Toyota Fortuner collided with the driver’s side door of the cash-in-transit vehicle. “It is alleged that a Toyota Fortuner travelling in the opposite direction deliberately rammed into the driver’s side of the cash-in-transit vehicle, forcing it to stop,” said Myburgh. Police said the vehicle was then blocked by a Toyota Hilux Legend double cab bakkie. “Approximately 15 armed suspects exited the vehicles and overpowered the security officers. The guards were instructed to unlock the doors and were dragged a short distance away from the vehicle, where they were forced to lie face down,” Myburgh said. One of the armed guards was disarmed during the robbery. The suspects allegedly gained access to the vehicle and stole an undisclosed amount of cash. Myburgh confirmed that the suspects set alight both the cash-in-transit vehicle and the Toyota Fortuner used in the collision. “Several shots were fired during the incident. Fortunately, no injuries were reported,” she said. The suspects fled the scene and no arrests have been made. “Investigations are ongoing, and police are following up on all available leads. Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is urged to contact their nearest police station,” Myburgh said.
