1–2 minutes By Patrick Makinita Religious leaders, government officials and community members gathered on Thursday for the funeral of Bishop Daniel Matebesi, where he was described as a committed church leader and community servant. Matebesi, 66, was the leader of the Independent Congregational Church of Southern Africa (ICCSA). He died in the early hours of Friday at his home in Letlhakane village outside Mahikeng after a short illness. Speakers at the service said Matebesi dedicated his life to the ministry and played an active role beyond the church, including participation in interfaith organisations across the country. North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi said Matebesi worked closely with the provincial government on community programmes. “His involvement in provincial government initiatives did not go unnoticed, as he consistently contributed his time to efforts aimed at restoring dignity and hope,” Mokgosi said. Matebesi was also known through his involvement in religious programming on Motsweding FM. Broadcaster and preacher Brown Mosiapoa, known as “De Bryn”, said Matebesi used the platform to address social and moral issues. “He preached without fear or favour and believed the church should respond to the challenges facing society,” Mosiapoa said. Long-time associate Modisa Mogorosi said Matebesi’s contribution to the church and broader society would continue to be felt. “He carried his responsibilities seriously and remained committed to his calling. Many of us learnt from him and will continue with the work,” Mogorosi said. Matebesi was buried at Matlalong Cemetery near Lokaleng village outside Mahikeng.
