Frustrated by ongoing water shortages, residents of Mokgola village near Zeerust have taken to the streets, blocking the R49 provincial route that connects South Africa to Botswana, in a dramatic display of protest against local authorities.

The demonstration follows similar actions by communities in Ikageleng, Dinokana, Sefereleng, and other neighbouring villages in recent weeks.

Protesters barricaded the road with burning tyres, stones, and other debris, demanding urgent solutions.

Residents said their efforts to highlight the crisis were met with heavy-handed policing rather than tangible action.

“Every time we voice our frustrations through protests, Public Order Police are deployed to disperse us forcefully. It feels like a violation of our human rights,” said Rebaone Modisane, a Mokgola resident.

Another resident, Paseka Modiakgotla, said the water crisis has persisted for years.

“We have been singing the same song about water shortages repeatedly, but the problem continues. The only way to get attention is through protests. Even then, the government responds with force instead of solutions,” Modiakgotla said.

Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality Executive Mayor Khumalo Molefe acknowledged the ongoing challenges in Mokgola. He said the municipality was actively addressing mechanical failures in the area’s water infrastructure.

“Of the 13 boreholes in the village, ten are operational, and three are under repair. Our technical team has been on site since last week, addressing the issues. Additionally, we have refurbished the pump station and drilled four new boreholes, which are currently being electrified by Eskom,” he said.
