1–2 minutes By Boitumelo Tshehle Thousands of residents and visitors flocked to Sun City Resort on October 26 for the annual Sun City GM’s Kasi Ride, a celebration of fitness, wellness, and community spirit. The event was led by Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism MEC Bitsa Lenkopane and the North West Parks and Tourism Board (NWPTB) and North West Gambling Board (NWGB). Participants enjoyed a variety of activities including cycling, running, and walking, all set against the scenic beauty of the Bojanala region. Kasi Ride not only encouraged healthy living but also offered attendees the chance to explore local tourism attractions. True to its mandate of social development and responsible citizenship, DEDECT used the platform to advance awareness campaigns on responsible drinking and gambling. Lenkopane said these initiatives, part of ongoing programmes such as Thuntsha Lerole. She said the aim was to educate communities while promoting balanced lifestyles. Several departmental staff members also joined the walk and run, proudly representing DEDECT’s message of wellness. The event also highlighted the department’s focus on economic inclusion. Through the Access to Market Programme, DEDECT provided eight micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) from the Bojanala district a chance to showcase and sell their local products to thousands of attendees. Featured enterprises included ,the Eve Essential, Paleigh Designs, Oliviavalentia Pty Ltd, TshegoM Enterprise, Candleberry Craft, Mmukwa Pty Ltd, Mpi Ntokozo, and Beige Butterfly. The initiative reflects DEDECT’s commitment to supporting local entrepreneurs, promoting procurement from local businesses, and creating sustainable job opportunities. Lenkopane praised the spirit of collaboration that the Kasi Ride fosters, saying, “Platforms like the Kasi Ride not only promote wellness but also strengthen community bonds and economic participation.” She further emphasised responsible citizenship, advising participants to support licensed outlets and continue backing local businesses. “Buy local to stimulate their sustainable growth, reinforcing the department’s dedication to community empowerment,” she said.
